Rio
Mustang/Arab (probably more arabian), bay gelding that would probably have gone to the Charros due to his high energy/fear. He got strangles and we rescued him. Rio is doing awesome. Just a gorgeous little guy! We are hoping to get some pens up soon so that we can bring him home. We will just let him settle in until Moses' training is over and we can afford to train Rio. He's a little pistol! Rescued 2/25/99

Updates

5/24/2018 - Tooth Fairy Showed Up-Holy Guacamole!

Sweet Rio has been with us over 19 years!  If you look closely at his front legs in these pictures, you can see the scars from when he was used for horse tripping just before we rescued him.

After all these years, Rio still gets amped up when "strangers" (vet, farrier, dentist) handle him.  He was lightly sedated and I think Joe & Martine were thinking they should have given him a bit more!  HA!  All in all, Rio was good and now his teeth are too!

3/25/2012 - Rio has his teeth Floated

3-25-2012, Sunday morning before the rain hit, Dr. Hugh Gibbs, DVM came out to help some of the horses be able to eat better and process their food by floating their teeth.

Rio was one of the lucky recipients of Dr. Gibbs' attention.  He was a very good boy!  His teeth were in need of filing down sharp edges so that he is able to chew his hay easier.

Rio is currently at Renee's. He went to Renee's to recover from strangles so bad that he had sores in his mouth, on the side of his mouth and horrible abscesses under his jaw. The abscess was so awful that Renee videoed the vet lancing it because she hadn't seen one this bad.  Rio will remain at Renee's until we can afford to put up a pen for him and bring him home. Sigh.

This little Arab cross (may be all Arab from what an experienced Arab lady has said) is a ball of fire.  Sores were in his mouth, on his tongue and a HUGE abscess under his jaw that even the vet was surprised by the amount of infection in there.

He is now fat, sassy and full of energy. We are in the same dilemma as we were with bringing Libbey home. We need another pen before we can bring Rio home. After he comes home, he will need training. Before that can begin though, we need to find the funds to have Moses trained.  Oh well, good things take time!
