DAWSON (RR Woodys Guy 035)
Dawson, aka RR Woodys Guy 035.

So, I did a thing. I had received information that there was an older horse going through our local horse auction on Saturday night that might be in trouble. I signed on to the live online auction. In the preview, I saw the horse I had been told about and I also saw a black QH that looked beat up. As the auction progressed, I received information that the original horse I was watching was safe. Then, the black/gray QH came through.

He wasnt ridden through and that should have been my first clue that something was amiss. He seemed to be handling the crowd/noise well. The marks on him appeared to be scuffs and scrapes from other horses or trailer or? One on his shoulder looked like it might have been bad (proved not to be and was old). Something was up with this guy and I couldnt figure it out. There were many bids and the price went up high. I had a maximum bid and when that was passed, I planned to opt out. There is a 20 second lag between posting a bid and the auction folks being able to see it. I fumbled my keyboard to opt out and then heard that I had won the bid! Looked at my screen and, yup I had increased my bid and therefore won the bid. ACK!

Our wonderful friend Dana agreed to pick him up for us and offered to Quarantine him also! Thank you Dana!! She goes to pick him up and he has a big hock on the right rear. Old injury apparently. Kept my fingers crossed it was something we could help him with. Turns out that it is a bit more involved than just a swollen hock. The leg bows out and the hock is weak. When he turns on it, he almost collapses. This boy is only 4 yrs. 4 months old!!!

7/10/2023 - Look At Him Now!

When we first got Dawson, he visited Dr. Hoyme who indicated that his leg was either a birth defect or that he had had an accident when he was younger that causes his leg to bow and sometimes causes him to be unsteady.  Xrays showed injury was too old to do anything about.  Dr. Hoyme told us he wouldn’t be and shouldn’t be rideable.  That the leg will eventually fail him and he would have to be euthanized at that time…or that we could euthanized him that day.  My heart was breaking.  I knew he wouldn’t be able to get the amount of turnout time he needed at TIER to help his leg stay strong.  The only alternative to us at the time was euthanasia or declining at TIER.  Then, the awesome Dana said “I can foster him”!

Dana has given him a really good life these last 4 years.  He was spooky & untrusting at first.  She spent time handling him and encouraging him to be a good citizen.  Her efforts have paid off!  We had his dental issues attended to by Dr. Johnson of Mohave River Equine twice.  He should be good for awhile.  He stands well for the farrier and loves to play with Lacey (donkey) and others.  He is now 7 yrs. old and seems to be enjoying life thanks to Dana!!

Look at him now!  Quite the color change!

2/26/2023 - Tooth Fairy!

Dr. Johnson from Mojave River Equine and his lovely partner Christel Cartwright came out to Foster Mom Dana S.'s to do dental work on Dawson and Dana's horses in mid February.  Thank you Dana for scheduling Dr. Johnson and making sure Dawson is well taken care of!!

Dr. Johnson indicated that his teeth were much better than they were previously.  Yay!

He sure is graying out!!

3/12/2022 - Tooth Fairy; Love My Foster Mom!!

Dr. Johnson from Mojave River Equine and his lovely partner Christel Cartwright came out to Foster Mom Dana Stark's today to do dental work on Dawson and Dana's horses.  Thank you Dana for scheduling Dr. Johnson!

From Dana:  Everyone was well-behaved.  Teeth and sheath for all my boys.  Dawson’s mouth was so much better than last year when he had remnants of baby teeth, fractured teeth and infection plus this time, he was brave, more trusting and handled it all so well this year 😊.  Thank you time and groundwork! Did vaccines while everyone was still loopy.  Good for another year!

9/18/2020 - Quick Update

It will not be until Saturday that we have someone to take an indepth look at Dawson's issues.  Hoping to get him to Dr. Hoyme for xrays and then possible chiropractic work.

We do know that he is able to lie down and to roll!

This picture shows how uneven his hips are.

While Dana was picking him up, I did some research and found his breeder in Texas.  Spoke to the gentleman who was surprised about where this boy ended up and he offered to buy him from us as he is a responsible breeder.  Once I found out about the injury, I informed the breeder and we decided that the horse would not work for what he does.  He asked that we keep him informed.

We welcome DAWSON to TIER!  His registered name is RR Woodys Guy, but we had a Woody previously and there just is not any replacing him or reusing his name for a TIER horse.  So, we are calling him DAWSON.

We have professionals coming to check him out on Thursday, 9/16/2020.  Tentative plans are being made to transport him to Dr. Thomas Hoyme for further evaluation.  I am holding my breath that this injury is something that can be helped and that I do not have to make an extremely hard decision.
