SHADOW
A long time supporter and bailer of Kill Pen Horses contacted us about a 22 year old blue roan mare at a lot in Oklahoma. She offered to pay the bail & transport to quarantine for the mare if we could take her in. Of course we said okay.

The mare had gone through an auction in Nebraska in mid January and 2 weeks later she was in the kill pen in Oklahoma. She had just weaned her 2021 foal 2 weeks before she went to auction. Talk about stress!

SHADOW, Welcome to TIER!

Updates

2/26/2023 - Such a sweet girl

Shadow has to be one of the sweetest mares we have had the pleasure of helping!  She is an easy going girl and also an easy keeper!

She is always ready to be scratched and petted.  She rules her group (Okie, Lottie Mae, Holly) with a quiet and graceful authority.  There is no question that she is the boss mare!

5/9/2022 - She's here!

They are here!  Shadow, Lottie Mae & Okie arrived at TIER on 5/9/2022..  They are in great shape and have formed their own little herd.  They are currently in with Holly and we will see how that goes.  Don't they look great??

5/6/2022 - Before & Now

3/31/2022 - UPDATE

SHADOW is, so far, a no muss/no fuss girl.  She’s gained weight and her blue roan coloring is becoming more roany.

She does enjoy attention and having Kathy giver her a "scritch" from the rake too!

2/28/2022 - UPDATE

SHADOW is so patient and sweet.  Someone is going to want to have her in their backyard.  She’s just a doll.  Her roaning is really starting to show.

2/22/2022 - UPDATE

FARRIER visit:  2/21/2022 No major hoof issues (YAY!)

SHADOW is just a really sweet mare.  Easy to catch, lead and easy for the farrier.  She is starting to roan out a bit more.  Lovely mare!!

2/16/2022 - ONLY THE SHADOW KNOWS!

(Wait. What?  Why the Trivia?  Only The Shadow Knows!)

Initially played by Orson Welles, this version of the Shadow was significantly different from the pulp version. On radio the Shadow was the secret identity of Lamont Cranston, who had the power to hypnotically cloud the minds of those near him to make himself invisible.

Using his invisibility to gather information and carry out psychological warfare on the criminals, the Shadow would inevitably foil their schemes.

SHADOW:  A long time supporter and bailer of Kill Pen Horses contacted us about a 20 year old blue roan mare at a lot in Oklahoma.

We could not arrange immediate transport to our favorite quarantine facility with Kathy and searched for a nearby QT facility.  Thanks to Marlene Dodge, one nearby was found where SHADOW could go until transport could be arranged.  She was picked up and quarantined for 3 days at a very nice facility nearby. She was then transported to Starburst Ranch where Kathy would take care of her until she and LOTTIE MAE would stay until they headed to California.

SHADOW wasn’t in too bad of weight considering she had recently had a foal pulled off her, been through an auction after living many years at the same place in Nebraska, ending up in kill pen in Oklahoma, moved short term to QT, and then traveling from Oklahoma to Kathy’s place in Texas.  No telling if she went to another auction after the Nebraska one, but you can be sure pockets got lined along the way.  Sigh.

She arrived at Kathy’s, stuck her head in the hay bin and didn’t look up.  Later, she developed a bit of a snotty nose and was put on Uniprim.  When the vet came out to do LOTTIE MAE’s teeth, we had him also do SHADOW’s teeth.  Her teeth were worse than LOTTIE MAE’s!

Now that her teeth are done, it is hoped that she will add weight nicely.  To me, her pictures looked like she was dirty from her travels, but Kathy assures me that is just her blue roan coloring.  She appears to be an alpha mare (we love these mares) and is pretty stoic.  She will be carpooling with LOTTIE MAE & NANCY ANN (If she’s not sick) to TIER later in the month or first part of March.
