LeRoy
Ring, Ring. Me: Hello?

TIER Supporter: How ya doin? You like those yaller horses dont ya?

Me: Im not partial to them really. My favorite colors are Liver Chestnut & Blue Roan. Why?

TIER Supporter: You like the cripples, skinny, not cared for

Me: We try to help when we can. Funds are super tight now because of some big vet bills and we just bought a load of alfalfa, some Teff hay and a couple weeks worth of senior feed & hay pellets. Whats going on?

TIER Supporter: Check out this video. Ill send you $500 if youll help him and maybe a little more down the road. Im strapped right now too. Call me back.

After viewing video & processing what I just saw..

Ring, Ring..

TIER Supporter: So, whatcha think?

Me: Sigh. Poor Guy. Its not going to get better where he is at. Hopefully we can raise funds for him. Well need funds for purchase, transport to quarantine, quarantine fees, farrier & maybe vet fees and then.transport to California. Itll be expensive and I dont know if we can do it. Updates

11/29/2021 - Tooth Fairy & Healing

LeRoy is doing really well.  He’s still a bit hard to catch and nervous/watchful.  That will hopefully get better with more handling.

Dr. Johnson & Christel of Mojave River Equine Veterinary (our GO TO Equine Dentist) came out and took care of teeth issues on 4 horses for us.  The bill for 4 dentals and services for 2 other horses came to close to 2000.  Any help would be most appreciated.  Fortunately, none of the horses required extractions or extensive dental work.

LeRoy’s teeth were not too bad and after a dose of sedative, he was a very good patient.  The injury to his shoulder that was so pronounced when he was first rescued from the killpen has gotten a lot better!  His shoulder blade no longer protrudes and he doesn’t have the head bobbing gait that he had in the beginning.  Yay for LeRoy!

9/11/2021 - The Golden Child Has Arrived!

The Golden Child has arrived!  Our transporter ran into some difficulty along the way when she ran over something that had dropped off a semi truck driving in front of her.  Whatever it was went up under her truck, beat it up a bit then went under the horse trailer and beat it up a whole bunch.  Broke the axle!!!  She had to get her trailer towed and find another trailer to complete her journey.  Not easy tasks.  After all that (no animals or humans were harmed) she was only a day behind schedule.  Thank goodness it wasn’t worse.  Thank you Ruby Lingo for bringing the boy home to TIER!

He was a bit sweaty, but it was a really HOT day.  Again.  LeRoy unloaded easily and was a gentleman as I led him to his corral.  His head was up, nostrils flared, eyes looking everywhere, yet he calmly walked with me.  He stopped when I asked and moved back when I needed to open the gate.  Such a good boy!!

We had hay and fresh water waiting for him, but he made several inspection rounds of his corral first.  He didn’t appear to be sore after the trip, even with his wonky shoulder!  Dr. Don Moore/chiropractor will be here Tuesday, 9/14/2021 to help him out if possible.  In the meantime, we will just let him settle in and get used to new ground, new water, new feed/hay and new horses.

Thanks to Kathy for taking such good care of him, Rob for trimming his horrible feet with stones in them, Rikki for transporting him from the lot to her place for a few days and then to Kathy’s Starburst Ranch.  We are grateful for the services of Robbie Stidham/Equine Sports Therapy in TX who did 2 chiropractic adjustments on LeRoy.  We very much appreciate the veterinary staff at Lazy 3 Animal Care for their skillful attention to LeRoy and for the x-rays they put on disc for us.

And, of course, we thank our donors for helping us to help LeRoy!!  Without YOU, his story would have been much different.  I will update after his visit with Chiropractor Dr. Don Moore.  Thank you ALL!

8/10/2021 - Don't Mess with my Feet!

At our temporary QT Facility, a farrier tried to clean up/trim, but he could barely get the fronts done because LeRoy wouldn’t/couldn’t cooperate.  Nasty stuff packed in there.

7/21/2021 at Primary QT Facility:  Farrier was out and could not get his feet done because he is so uncomfortable.  Farrier felt like something was going on somewhere other than his feet.

He is on Bute.  Vet watched him walk and didn't think it was navicular.  Vet was out for another horse and did not have time to evaluate.  2nd, farrier attempted to do fronts and horse was not having it.  Not thought to be behavioral.  Farrier thinks something else is going on.  LeRoy is easy going until you try to do his feet.

He will be trailered to the vets in order to administer Dermosedan so farrier can attempt to do his feet again.  Not sure if we should get xrays.  Not sure if pain/discomfort is in the feet or higher up.

Farrier visit...went to vets to be sedated.  Farrier said there were stones in his frogs that had been there a couple months & thrush.  Something up with his left shoulder per farrier.

8/10/2021 - Chiropractic & X-rays

Chiropractic UPDATE:  Dr. Stidham adjusted LeRoy.  Thinks he may have been run into a fence.  Shoulder and neck were REALLY out!  Back was out and so was poll.

Leroy still lame and you can see his shoulder pop when he moves though he is moving more readily and stands with his weight evenly distributed.  He doesn’t have that peg leg movement either.  Doesn’t appear to be all that uncomfortable.

Kathy transported LeRoy to the vet for x-rays.  They had to sedate him to the point that he was lying down in order to get x-rays under his elbow area.  X-rays showed a little arthritis, but nothing broken.  If it is mainly soft tissue, it may take awhile to heal.  Dr. Stidham (chiropractor) and Dr. Brooks (vet) spoke together about LeRoy’s issues.

UPDATE after x-rays:  As a matter of fact he is moving better and with a bit more energy. He still limps but he seems more willing to move.  Talked with Dr. Stidham last night late. He’s going to check his schedule and see when he could come out next. He likes to give them a week to 10 days between adjustments so will see what he comes up with.

7/14/2021 - We will hug him, and pet him, and squeeze him, ...

We will hug him, and pet him, and squeeze him, and love him and we will name him LeRoy!

LeRoy and Jewel arrived at our Primary Quarantine Facility, Starburst Ranch/Kathy's place, on Monday.  He has a habit of not backing out of the trailer.  He turns around and comes out head first.  No big deal.

He is still a bit sore on his left front foot.  He has been eating/drinking well, letting Kathy know that he is starving and needs more food.  Kathy knows about this manipulative behavior because BEAU (who is doing quite well) acts the very same way.

Dr. Browning, DVM from Lazy 3 Animal Care came out to Kathy's Wednesday afternoon (7/14/21) to check on Jewel's wound/overall condition and to give LeRoy a once over.  He will be calling me to relay his opinion on care going forward and I will update everyone as soon as I can.

He did say that before we ask for x-rays of LeRoy's feet, to get a farrier out because his feet appear to be long and he suspects an abcess in the right front.  Previously we had LeRoy's feet cleaned up a bit at the Temporary Quarantine facility, but he was too sore to stand very long for a full trim.  Kathy will schedule a farrier visit as soon as possible.

LeRoy appears to be very personable and Kathy had a hard time getting a picture of him because he kept closely following her.
